Root canals hurt.
Many people think root canals are painful. The truth is that modern root canal treatment can be performed with little or no discomfort. The part of your tooth that's under the gum line is called the root. Inside each root there is a channel, called the root canal, that contains nerves and blood supply to provide sensation to your tooth. Sometimes gum disease, decay or a fracture can cause these nerves and vessels to become painfully infected. Years ago this condition often meant extracting the tooth. But today we can use root canal therapy to treat the infected canal. Whereby a small opening is made in the tooth to clean and medicate the inflamed root canal. When the infection is gone, the canal space is filled with a rubber type material. Successfully treated teeth last just as long, and look just as good as normal teeth.
Bad breath can not be fixed.
Bad breath is often caused by tooth decay, gum disease, or general health problems. A visit to your dentist can help determine where your bad breath is coming from and how this problem can be fixed.
I only have to go to the dentist if I have problem with my teeth.
Many problems in the mouth occur quietly in the mouth. Routine dental checks can find problems early on before a big toothache can start.
Wisdom teeth must come out.
Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt. It can take a long time for wisdom teeth to come out of the gum and you may not even notice the harmful changes in your mouth until they cause sudden and severe discomfort. Cramped for room, impacted wisdom teeth can grow out at many different angles or remain trapped under the gum line. Nearby teeth can get pushed or damaged, gum disease may develop where the tooth breaks in, or the tooth itself can fall prey to decay because it's hard to clean. Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed. The only way to know for sure is to get an expert diagnosis at the dental office.
Raising cavity free kids is possible.
Clean your baby's mouth with gauze or a soft washcloth after every meal. After the first teeth come in, use a tiny dab of toothpaste on a toothbrush for cleaning. Teeth should be brushed at least 2x per day. Begin regular check-ups every 6 months at the age of 3 years, unless you notice a specific problem earlier. Consult your dentist about fluoride supplements. Consider sealants if your child has deep grooves in their back teeth. More than 50% of kids' cavities develop on the chewing surface of the teeth. Sealants are plastic coatings which can allow the teeth to be kept clean more easily. Try to minimize intake of sticky and sugary foods.
